Internet SIG, February 2018, Halt. Who Goes There?

November 24th, 2017
February 24, 2018
10:15 amto12:15 pm

First, please note the changed locations below for the meeting and breakfast… for this month only.  I changed the Yahoo calendar too, but it has a nasty habit of not handling changes well, so if tomorrow’s message disagrees with this, please ignore it!

We’re going to review old war movies, but we will take another look at the 2 most important ways to stay safe online.  Strong passwords are the first step, but are both a challenge and not sufficient by themselves.  So we will look again at managing passwords and two factor authentication.

I also had a question recently about podcasts, so we’ll brush up on them as well.

And there is plenty of news lately and some tips, so there will be plenty to discuss.  So “c,mon down”!

Internet SIG, January 2018, Finding Your Way

October 27th, 2017
January 27, 2018
10:15 amto12:15 pm

What do you do when an address is not available or not precise enough…. and latitude / longitude is too difficult.  How about using 3 words to describe a location… down to 3m x 3m squares?  I was really skeptical of this, but looked into it and it’s not nearly so crazy as it sounds!

Care to read something from one of the big news sources, but a subscription is just not practical?  There is a solution!

Sometimes the “filter bubble” (search results customized for you) are helpful, but not so much when you’re trying to explore a new or controversial topic.  Well, you guessed it, there is a solution to that too!

All this, news, tips, Q&A, and the funnies!

Beginners SIG, January 13th, 2018, Computer Fundamentals

October 13th, 2017
January 13, 2018
10:00 amto12:00 pm

Computer Fundamentals:  This month we’ll start our 2-year learning cycle anew by introducing computer terminology, components and concepts. You’ll see the internal computer components like the power supply, hard disk drive, CD/DVD drive, motherboard, microprocessor chip and memory sticks. And you’ll learn what these parts do. We’ll explain the difference between Hardware and Software and introduce a couple of metaphors that put computer workings into everyday terms. You’ll learn fundamental software terms like Programs, Data, Files, Bits and Bytes. And we’ll refer you to some websites with free tutorials on computers and other cool things. This is the ideal “first” meeting for computer neophytes. If you have a neighbor, friend or relative who could use a new hobby, productivity enhancer or maybe just a little help with computer problems, then please bring him or her along.
