Presenter: Dr. David Bourell,
Professor Of Mechanical Engineering, University of Texas
BIOGRAPHY
Dr. David L. Bourell earned his Ph.D. in material science and engineering from Stanford University in 1979. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin that same year. He is affiliated with the Texas Materials Institute. Dr. Bourell researches properties of plastic and metal powders and other materials, and their uses in fabrication processes. He studies deformation and powder processing, failure analysis and nanocrystalline materials. Bourell researches the kinetics of sintering and selective laser sintering, a fabrication technique that uses virtual designs on a computer and a laser to fabricate items, from human prosthetic devices to titanium missile tips, using metal or plastic powder. He is internationally recognized in the field of Solid Freeform Fabrication, a manufacturing technique that produces freeform solid objects directly from a computer model. Solid freeform fabrication reduces cost and design time because it can manufacture objects in one operation instead of multiple steps.

This month I have two Linux distributions to demonstrate/contrast. First is the KDE version of Mint 12 (aka Lisa), and the second is the first beta of what will become Ubuntu 12.04 next month, aka Precise Pangolin. (If you don’t know what kind of an animal a pangolin might be, it is the scaly anteater.)
12.04 is a LTS (long-term support) release of Ubuntu. In fact it is the first extra-long-term support release, since Canonical intends to support the desktop version for FIVE years instead of the normal three. (Other releases, like the current 11.10, are supported for 18 months on the desktop. Server LTS has always been for five years.)
Since Ubuntu and Mint are the #1 and #2 most popular distributions at the moment (in one order or another), come to the meeting and see the future. I”ll have CD/DVD installation disk handouts for both.

Spreadsheets for Number Crunching: We’ll introduce you to Spreadsheets which make working with numbers as easy as word processors work with words. You’ll want to throw away your calculator once you’ve tried spreadsheets. (Well, almost.) Spreadsheets are the easiest way to do income tax tallies, mortgage & amortizations, balance sheets, income statements, ledgers, small mailing lists, bids, invoices, graphs and much more.
