Linux Beginners SIG, September 2010, Ubuntu 10.10, more shell, Kindle K3

Kind of a grab bag this month.  I have copies of the beta of Ubuntu 10.10 to
demonstrate and give away.  Next month we’ll have the real thing.  Usually
Canonical releases the last Thursday of the month, which in this case would be
October 29th, but they couldn’t resist and pushed up the schedule two and a
half weeks so they could release version 10.10 on 10/10/10, which happens to
be a Sunday.  (The October SIG meeting will be on the 12th.)

Other than that, I’ll try to finish up the tutorial I’ve been running the past
few months on using the command line and shell scripts.  I still think any of
you actually running Linux should be using Zsh instead of Bash as your default
shell.

Also, Don and I will undoubtedly be showing off our new K3 Kindle e-book
readers, which have magically appeared in our mailboxes since the last
meeting.  By the way, I made myself what I consider to be a very handsome and
useful hardwood stand (mine is Rosewood) for the Kindle.  (It probably works
for the Nook, etc. but I haven’t tried it).  I made two more for Don and
Penny, and as long as I had the saw and the gluing jig set up, produced a few
more as demonstrations.  At the moment I have them in Walnut, Bubinga (a
beautiful red tropical hardwood), and Cherry, and have Mahogany and Red oak
boards around the shop somewhere.  If you’re interested, let me know and I’ll
sell you one for $10, which is a real bargain considering what solid hardwood
costs these days.  See www.io.com/~dierdorf/kindlestand.jpg to see what they
look like.  Tell your friends who have a Kindle.  Who knows, I might be able
to fund my retirement with these things.  :-)

See you Tuesday.

John
