Linux Beginners SIG, April 2014, Ubuntu, v14.04, aka Trusty Tahr

We’re a week and a half away from the next Long Term Release of Ubuntu, v14.04, aka Trusty Tahr. As everyone knows, a tahr is an Asian mountain goat. The final beta is available, and I’ll show it off tomorrow, along with a nice high-resolution photograph of a genuine Himalayan Tahr.

Most of you know that I have not been a fan (to put it mildly) of the default Ubuntu “Unity” desktop. Many, many people agreed it was an abomination on a large desktop or laptop screen, and for once the programmers have listened to the mob at their door with sharpened stakes. There are a lot of (IMHO) usability fixes I’ll show tomorrow (Tuesday). I’ll also have DVDs of the 32 and 64bit betas for anyone who wants to try them out. (Note that the beta is quite stable, and if you simply keep updating every day to get the stuff being sneaked in at the last moment, you will automatically have an honest LTS 14.04 installation on April 17th.

Anyway I’ll show off Ubuntu this month and then the LTS Kubuntu next month.

Hope to see you.

(BTW, if anybody is having problems with one of the XP-Replacement installations we did last month, feel free to bring your machine to this month’s meeting.)
