Beginners’ SIG, Saturday, April 11, 2020

Word Processing:  We’ll show you how to use Microsoft Word, the Word Processor that comes in the Microsoft Office (MSO) suite. With it you can create memos, letters, envelopes, flyers, signs and even business cards. We’ll explain the “ribbon” interface that’s now common to all MSO apps like Word, Excel and Powerpoint. We’ll review the more commonly used tabs and operations done with Word. If time allows, we’ll also demonstrate the simple Wordpad word processor and the Notepad text editor which are built-in to all versions of Windows, i.e., you get them for no extra charge—unlike Word and MSO which are fairly pricey. We’ll also introduce you to free word processors like Open/Libre Office and Google Docs. And we’ll introduce you to GCFLearnFree.org, a terrific online library of free and easy tutorials on how to use Word, Excel, MSO and much more.

Beginners SIG Will Teleconference This Time: Please join us this Saturday morning at 10am for the Beginners’ SIG meeting–from the comfort of your home. The libraries will be closed for the next month or two so we’ll use Zoom teleconferences to keep going until they reopen. I will email you an invitation that has a link to my meetings. Just click on the link, Zoom will be installed  if you haven’t already done so, and then you’ll be able to join the meeting. It’s a pretty straightforward process. I’ll probably hold one or two practice sessions on Friday, April 10th, so things will go more smoothly at the SIG meeting on Saturday morning. Watch your email for the invitations. I’d like to spend most of the time on Saturday morning with the advertised topic, not with Zoom. So if you have questions about using Zoom then please join a practice session on the 10th. If you can’t wait to get started then go to the Zoom website at  https://zoom.us/  enter your email address and sign up for the free service. You’ll be able to test your audio and video before joining an actual teleconference. Unfortunately, the free service limits meetings to 40 minutes so we won’t be able to cover as much ground as in a normal meeting. But maybe we’ll have a 2nd session.
